The hotel was owned by the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway and its successors, including the CSX Corporation, for most of its history. However, CSX decided to place the hotel into bankruptcy in 2009 due to significant losses. In order to prevent this, local entrepreneur Jim Justice, through his company Justice Family Group, LLC, purchased the property and guaranteed all debts, resulting in the dismissal of the bankruptcy. Justice had plans to restore the hotel to its former five-star status and also introduce tasteful gambling as a way to generate additional revenue.

Aside from the hotel and its championship golf courses, the Greenbrier also has another attraction: an enormous underground bunker that was designed to be an emergency shelter for the United States Congress during the Cold War. This bunker serves as a reminder of the hotel's historical significance during a crucial period in American history.

The credit line for the photograph reads: West Virginia Collection within the Carol M. Highsmith Archive, Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division.
